Modern lighting systems today fulfil far more purposes than just providing basic lighting for indoor or outdoor areas. Lamps, luminaires, and LEDs are at the heart of energy efficiency, sustainability, and technological innovation. With the growing importance of saving energy and protecting the environment, legal requirements and standards demand not only high efficiency, but also quality, reliability, and environmental compatibility of the products.
Ecodesign (EU Regulation 2019/2020)
The ecodesign requirements for light sources and separate control gears according to Directive 2009/125/EC define minimum requirements for efficiency and environmental compatibility. This regulation consolidates numerous older regulations for halogen lamps, fluorescent lamps, and LEDs, creating uniform standards across the European market. The key criteria of the Ecodesign Regulation are:
- Energy consumption (active power)
- Luminous efficacy (lumens/watt)
- Durability and reliability
- Materials and environmental aspects (e.g., recyclability)
Energy labelling (EU Regulation 2019/2015)
The energy labelling of light sources regulates the energy efficiency classes (A to G) for lamps and LED lights. It informs consumers about a product’s energy consumption and efficiency class. It is important to note that only correctly labelled products may be sold. Manatory labelling information includes:
- Energy efficiency class (A–G or scaled A–G)
- Annual energy consumption (kWh)
- If applicable: Luminous flux, lifespan, lumens, color temperature
Additional requirements
In addition to ecodesign and energy labelling, international standards regulate the technical performance requirements for lamps, luminaires, and LEDs:
- DIN EN / IEC 62722-1: Requirements for performance of luminaires
- DIN EN / IEC 62722-2-1: Particular requirements for LED luminaires
- DIN EN / IEC 62717: LED modules for general lighting – performance requirements
- DIN EN / IEC 62612: Self-ballasted LED lamps for general lighting services with supply voltages > 50 V – performance requirements
- DIN EN / IEC 60969: Self-ballasted lamps for general lighting services – performance requirements
