SGS – Your partner for EMC and product safety testing
Electrical equipment for measuring, control, and laboratory use is used in a wide range of applications. The requirements placed on these products are high: They must be innovative, often compact, and above all operate safely – even under changing and demanding environmental conditions.
Users rely on devices and systems to function safely under almost all operating conditions. Use in laboratory and industrial environments places high demands on product safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Increasing customer requirements for quality and safety are a key driver of the continuous development of these products.
SGS supports manufacturers of laboratory equipment, industrial control systems and specialized measuring devices with EMC and product safety testing in accordance with national and international standards, such as IEC 61326 and IEC 61010. With many years of experience and an international network of testing laboratories and certification bodies, SGS offers comprehensive one-stop solutions.
Product safety testing according to IEC 61010
With SGS’s product safety testing in accordance with IEC 61010-1, you can ensure that your devices and systems take all relevant hazards into account during use. The series of standards outlines how risks are assessed and safety tests are applied, and includes general safety requirements such as:
- Testing under single fault conditions
- Markings and documentation
- Protection against electric shock
- Protection against mechanical hazards
- Mechanical strength
- Protection against the spread of fire
- Equipment temperature limits and resistance to heat
- Protection against hazards from fluids and solid foreign objects
- Protection against radiation, including laser radiation, sound, and ultrasonic pressure
- Protection against released gases, substances, explosion, and implosion
- Components and assemblies
- Protection by interlocks
- Hazards arising from the application
- Risk assessment
The standard series is supplemented by the IEC 61010-2-xx standards, which define specific requirements for particular types of test, measurement, control, and laboratory equipment. For a safe product, both the base standard and the applicable part 2 standards must be fulfilled.
Electromagnetic Compatibility testing according to IEC 61326
- Both in Europe and in many other international markets, compliance with EMC requirements according to IEC 61326-1 or the relevant particular requirements according to IEC 61326-2-x is required for classic electrical measuring, control, and laboratory equipment. For the testing of these EMC requirements, we are at your disposal with our expert test engineers and excellent equipment.
- Furthermore, in addition to IEC 61326-1, additional requirements with regard to immunity to interference according to IEC 61326-3-1 must be complied with if electrical measuring, control, regulation, and laboratory equipment is intended for safety-related functions (functional safety).
- Testing of the specific requirements for medical in vitro diagnostic (IVD) devices according to IEC 61326-2-6
- EMC testing and certification according to the IECEE CB procedure
- Testing of USA EMC and radio requirements according to Part 15 and Part 18 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for your Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) or Certification
- Evaluation of “combined equipment,” i.e., devices and systems that use radio technologies to send or receive data, for which the following standards apply: ETSI EG 203 367 with EN 301 489-x and, for instance, EN 300 220 or EN 300 328
- Training and webinars on the current content of standards – further information
- Individual EMC workshops
Our EMC laboratory has several absorber halls with measuring distances of 3 m and 10 m for radiated emissions and immunity testing, as well as shielded measuring rooms and other measuring stations for conducted EMC tests. Of course, we have connections for cooling water, compressed air, exhaust gas extraction, and special pipes, and also large test samples with up to 55 t/m2 and 125 A per phase can be tested.
Certifications and global market access
- The IEC 61326 and IEC 61010 standard series form the basis for IECEE CB certification, which makes it much easier for you to obtain approvals in your target markets.
- The European versions of the EN 61010 standards from the Official Journal of the European Union form the basis for your CE declaration of conformity.
- The UL 61010 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010 standards enable certification for the North American market.
- SGS North America certification gives you market access in the USA and Canada. Country-specific deviations and certification for the USA and Canada can be integrated into existing test programs at any time.
- As a global leader in inspection, testing, verification, and certification, we are the ideal partner to have at your side to help you bring your products to market in compliance with the relevant regulations. Read more here about global market access.
