Cybersecurity – From RED to CRA. What manufacturers must have in mind now.
The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU defines the regulatory framework for the approval of radio equipment within the EU. Due to the rapid expansion of IoT devices and growing connectivity, cybersecurity has become an essential element of RED compliance. Since August 1, 2025, a wide range of radio products placed on the EU market must comply with mandatory cybersecurity requirements. This directly impacts manufacturers, importers, and distributors - often without full awareness of the extent of these new obligations. The current RED cybersecurity provisions (2022/30 EU) are expected to be replaced by the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) in 2027. What implications does this have for the stakeholders involved?
To enhance the protection of connected devices against cyber threats and misuse, the EU has supplemented the Radio Equipment Directive with additional requirements covering network security, personal data protection, and fraud prevention. In particular, IoT devices, smart home solutions, wearables, radio modules, routers, and numerous other products - many of which were not previously subject to cybersecurity requirements - are affected. Since the compliance deadline, only products that meet these criteria and can demonstrate conformity are permitted to be placed on the EU market.
Our webinar offers a structured overview of the updated RED cybersecurity requirements, highlights the affected product groups, and outlines the necessary steps for achieving CE-compliant implementation. In addition, we address typical challenges and show how SGS can support you in meeting the new EU RED requirements efficiently and securely, as well as what to consider in view of the upcoming CRA.
