The SGS NRTL mark – the key to entering the North American market
The SGS NRTL mark was developed to attest the agreement of a product with the applicable American and Canadian standards in force (e.g. UL 60950, UL 61010, ANSI, CAN/CSA 22.2.) by means of an independent assessment. During the process of this assessment it is not only confirmed that the product complies with the effective legal standards, but also that the materials used, the manufacturing process, the manufacturing conditions, as well as the quality assurance system of the manufacturer guarantees continued safety of the product. If the products satisfy the requirements laid out, the registered SGS mark may be carried as a distinguishing mark on the product. This type of 3rd party certification is a key factor and opens many opportunities for the American market. It also gives the American controlling bodies named “Authorities Having Jurisdiction” (AHJs) a speedy basis for decision making.
The SGS laboratory in the US is officially approved as a test laboratory by the American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and belongs to the Nationally Recognised Test Laboratory (NRTL) program, and is therefore allowed to conduct approvals on the basis of UL-standards. Furthermore, SGS is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) to perform inspections according to CSA standards and to issue a corresponding joint approval mark for the US and Canada. The SGS Center for Quality Engineering in Munich is accredited to conduct tests for these US product approvals. SGS NRTL certification is a quick and cost-effective approbation method for the American and Canadian market entry.
The SGS NRTL approval mark is a recognised method to certify conformance to legal demands, which result amongst others from the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). For more information click to
